Lead Generation

One of the most sought-after topics in entrepreneurial business education has to be how to do effective lead generation. The reason that the topic is so popular is that it wildly misunderstood and marketers use our fears about lead generation and sales to sell us their super-secret magic solutions to getting new clients.

The truth is, and you are not going to like it, there is no magic solution for lead generation. There are essentially two categories of lead generation: organic and paid. Paid lead generation is just that, you give someone your money and they run advertising for you to try to get you leads. Organic lead generation is when you invest time vs. investing money right away.

Whether you are doing organic or paid lead generation often depends on the stage you are in within your business and your financial and time situation. If you are a new coach or consultant that has not yet defined their niche or elevator pitch, it is less likely that you are going to want to spend money on ads without having a clear call to action. If you are well established in your business, then you might not want to spend the time doing the copywriting for your ads and may instead opt for getting an agency to do the lead generation.

What you often see out in the marketplace are marketers that are giving you the magic solution to getting leads organically. This is not to say that organic lead generation does not work or even that those marketers are being misleading. Honestly, you can have a successful lead generation strategy that is all organic and gives you the results you need. The trick is to know how much time that will take and to pick the right medium for creating the lead generation content and the right distribution channel for that content.

Here’s the thing. You need to find a way to generate valuable content for your audience that they both want to consume and that you can consistently produce that content. So, if you like to write, consider blogging. If you like to talk, consider podcasting. If you like to dance, maybe try TikTok. The big caution here is not to let some guru tell you that the only organic strategy that works is doing daily Live videos on Facebook when you would rather jump out of a plane than do Live videos. You want to match your preferred way of generation content with your organic lead generation strategy so you can both enjoy creating the content and continue to maintain a consistent lead generation content creation strategy.
