Business Foundations — Part 4: The How

The HOW: Business Processes

This is the fourth and final post in a series of the most important four questions that you need to answer to run your new or existing business effectively. These four questions are the foundation of a great business model. Having the right foundations in place before you begin to do a significant amount of investment in things like marketing and advertising can help you avoid throwing bad money after more bad money.

In the previous week’s post, we discussed WHY you do what you do and how that matters to you and your customers. Today we will touch on the topic of HOW do you deliver the WHAT you defined earlier for the WHO that matters to your business. HOW you do what you do is a much larger topic than most entrepreneurs think.

HOW you provide your service isn’t the only thing you have to think about when considering this topic. You will want to consider how to you do your client on boarding, how do you do sales and marketing, how do you do your accounting, how do you do your taxes, how do you deal with legal issue, and even how do you pay your bills. These things all take time and energy and are all the responsibility of one person at the start of your business: You.

The problem with the HOW question is that we do not anticipate the time and energy it will take to complete the tasks that are outside of delivering our service to others. Part of that might be because you worked for someone else most of your life and there was always someone else responsible for things like checking the mail and making out checks. Yet, in your business you have to make time for ALL the processes that need to be done within your business.

Your first step might just be to catalog all the of the values things you will need to do to support your business. Then, perform each of those tasks and document them so that you don’t have to remember how to do them each time you they are needed. Finally, as you build your business and you have the revenue to support it, outsource those already documented processes to someone else that is better equipped to do the work and will cost a lot less than the time it takes you to do it all yourself.
